Black bear cub clings to a cottonwood tree. Black bear cubs are quite small. When they emerge from the den in spring, the cubs typically weigh around five pounds or so. At a sharp vocalization from their mother, this cub and its sibling quickly climbed to safety in a cottonwood tree.
