Black bear cub clings to a cottonwood tree. Black bear cubs are quite small. When they emerge from the den in spring, the cubs typically weigh around five pounds or so. Cubs are very vulnerable to accidents and predators like wolves and other bears. Black bears, including cubs, are very good climbers and seek safety in the trees. At a sharp vocalization from their mother, this cub and its sibling quickly climbed to safety in a cottonwood tree. Black bear cubs grow very quickly and can weigh around 80 pounds by their first birthdays
