Description
During the autumn breeding season, known as the rut, cows congregate, often as many as 20 or more, and are guarded by a dominant bull. Bulls, like this one, protect a gathering of cows from smaller bulls. Unlike elk harems, which are rounded up and controlled by a large bull, cow moose are loose gatherings that determine the course of travel and activity. Dominant bulls follow the cows and ward off challengers. Battles between competing bulls can be fierce and result in injury.
